Location and surrounding area.
Pamporovo
Pamporovo resort is quite simply the largest and to many the best ski
resort in Bulgaria. The resort is in the heart of the Rhodope mountains
240 kilometres from the capital Sofia and 85 kilometres to the south of
Plovdiv. Both towns have international airports with bus services from
either Sofia or Plovdiv giving direct routes to the resort. Getting
Pamporovo by car of course is always an popular option and can be done
with ease.
With its 270 sunny days a year, Pamporovo is famous for being by far
the sunniest Bulgarian ski resort. There are no abrupt changes in
weather here or fear of high winds. Snow covered areas last for over
150 days (120 of those days are sunny) a year with an average depth of
between 140 to 150 centimeters reaching over 2 metres at times.
The
average winter temperature is minus 3 degrees Centigrade with season
skiing and snowboarding season starting at the end of November and
lasts right through until the end of April.
Pamporovo is situated at an altitude of 1650 metres above sea level at
the foot of Snejanka peak (1926 metres high),
It is from here that the
ski courses start reaching down to the resort and to the impressive
Smolyan lakes. The total length of ski runs are over 18,000 metres with
various degrees of difficulty. For ski running and biathlon there are
courses near the Snejanka peak and a shooting range at the Yazovira
region. The cableways and ski-lifts of the ski courses have the massive
capacity to run up to 8,500 persons an hour.
Within the resort are
several ski schools offering highly-qualified instruction in skiing and
snowboarding at all levels. There are both national and international
ski competitions held here including Alpine disciplines, ski running,
ski orientation, biathlon as well as the spectacular competitions in
snowboarding - free style!
Smolyan
Smolyan is the administrative centre of the region and only 11 kilometres
to the south of Pamporovo. The town has everything you would expect from
the capital of the region and is known as a students' and youths'
magnet. This vibrant town offers a number of possibilities and
opportunities for entertainment and energetic life.
Rhodope Mountains - the home of Orpheus
The Rhodope Mountains resembles a sea of dark-green hills merging into
one another creating a beautiful panorama amidst magical crystal pure
air you cannot fail to fall in love with. For thousands of years people
here have been living in harmony with its nature well preserved
mountains recesses amongst the wild and untouched corners of beauty
amidst an array of the most unbelievable variety of plants and
wildlife.
You can ramble or hike among century old spruce and
beech-trees sometimes catching a glimpse of a running doe, a fluffy
tailed squirrel or a long eared rabbit. The Rhodopes, full of colour,
birdsong and the backdrop sound of the highland brooks, you will feel
as one with nature here!
Orpheus Country - No longer an Underworld
The mythical singer who used to charm people, birds and wild animals
with his music was born here in the Rhodope Mountains. He has been
preserved in memory and the woods still resound with the sounds of the
local bagpipe and the magic voices of his ancestors.
