Shumen Province
Kaolinovo The Municipality is in
the northeastern part of the Loudogorie Mountain. the area is mainly
flat to undulating, plateau-like. The altitude above sea level varies
from 100 to 500 m. The are vast spaces occupied by flat watersheds. The
climate in the Municipality is mild due to the influence of the Black
Sea; it may be defined as moderate continental. The average annual
temperature is 23 - 25°C. Typical for
the Municipality Kaolinovo are the strong winds of velocity 3-4 m/sec,
as well as autumn fogs, white frost and frequent hail storms.
Kaspichan the Municipality
comprises Pliska National Historical and Architectural Reserve and a
part of Madara National Historical and Architectural Reserve. In the
western foot of the Madara Plateau, 1.5 km east of the village of
Madara Madara National Historical and Architectural Reserve is located.
The Madara Horseman is included on the UNESCO List of World Heritage
and is connected with the huge rock complex built by Khan Omourtag on
the terrace under the rocks. In the foot of the rocks there is a big
cave called the Nymphs' Cave. Pliska is
one of the most imposing monuments of medieval European civil
engineering in towns. It was in this area that in 886 AD Kniaz Boris I
received the creators of the Slavonic alphabet, the brothers Cyril and
Methodius.
Nikola Kozlevo has a population
of just under 9000. There are no large polluters of the environment in
the Municipality or around it making is a healthy place to retreat to.
There is a tourist site is the Hunters' Hut in Pet Mogili village used
for organized national and international hunting tourism.
Novi Pazar is a town located in a hollow
between the Shumen,
Ludogorie and Provadiya plateaus, on the banks of the Kriva Reka
("twisting river"). The climate is extremely favorable to the
successful development of agricultural production, stock-breeding and
forestry. The town of Novi Pazar is situated in the outwash terrace of
the River Kriva and lies 20 km away from the city of Shoumen.
Preslav was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893
to 972 and one of the most important cities of medieval Southeastern
Europe. The ruins of the city are situated in modern northeastern
Bulgaria, some 20 kilometres southwest of the regional capital of
Shumen, and are currently a national archaeological reserve.
Smyadovo - The most significant sites in
the municipality are the following: The pre-historic mound in the
Goliam Yurdan Locality dating back from the 3,500-3,100 B.C. The ten
Thracian burial mounds from the 5th-4th c. B.C. near the town; the two
fortresses - Chelina and Lisichka Kale from the 4th-6th c.; the Racho's
Tell by the village of Kulnovo in the Nazlumov Little Wells Location; a
Thracian sanctuary under the Dervishtepe Burial Mound; a burial mound
and the Hisaria Fortress as well as a large number of fortresses and
ancient villages; a bridge-monument in Smiadovo in honor of the people
that died during the 1912-1918 wars. The old church school from 1846 in
the center of the town has been transformed into an ethnographic
museum. The St. Archangel Michael Church from 1869 is also part of the
cultural monuments in the region. Four arts, culture and literature
centres - in Smiadovo and in the villages of Veselinovo, Rish and
Yankovo - contribute to the preservation of the cultural traditions in
the municipality. The "chitalishte" in Smiadovo was built in 1860 and
is the first village "chitalishte" in the country.
The rivers, brooks, forests and beautiful locations together with the
good geo-strategic location of the municipality are prerequisites for
the development of fishing, hunting, eco and rural tourism.
Varbitsa is situated in the Gerlovska
hollow, in the foot of the Eastern Balkan Range and is an
environmentally clean region. There are no large companies in the
vicinity to pollute the environment. Tourist routes are spread all over
the mountain. Tourists may find accommodation in a large and well
maintained tourist hut located in the beginning of the Varbitsa
mountain pass.
Veliki Preslav is a former village, it
assumed the name of the
medieval capital in 1878 and became a town in 1883. As of 2005 it has a
population of 10,064 and the mayor is Racho Kozhuharov. It lies at, 92
m above sea level. The Municipality is successfully implementing the
Beautiful Bulgaria Project. The Road to Patleina Project is about to be
completed. It will provide access to a number of tourist attractions.
Other projects under review and subject to approval include the road
Veliki Preslav-Kochovo, improving the water supply and sewerage system
in Osmar - a village with considerable potential for tourism
development, as well as projects for the refurbishment of two schools
and a arts, culture and literature centre.
Venets 3km away is the Palamara State
Game-Breeding Reserve. It is one of the oldest game reserves in
Bulgaria established in 1932 by the Bulgarian king Boris III as a Royal
Hunting Ground. The main branches of the Reserve's activity are the
game-breeding /red deer/ and international tourism. The rich and varied
available food allows for the maintaining of a substantial reserve of
large game: red deer, wild boar and roe deer. Emblematic for the region
is the old windmill.
Shumen is a city and the capital of the province. Formally in
1950-1965 it was called
Kolarovgrad. Other English variants include Shoumen, Šumen, Shumla, and
Shumnu. The city has a population of 103,016 (2006.) Located in the
foot of the Shoumen Plateau Natural Park, the city is a real phenomenon
in that it holds precedence among Bulgarian cities with many things,
such as: the first school for girls in Bulgaria was opened here, the
first Bulgarian orchestra with classical instruments, the first theater
performance, the first founded arts, culture and literature centre.
There are numerous cultural and natural sights and historical and
archeological monuments in Shoumen Municipality.
